It is quite astonishing how we as human beings are so easily prone to assumptions. Most of us assume that when someone calls us to enquire about something and we do not give them feedback, that is ok. We also assume that getting to work or a meeting late without communicating prior, is not such a big deal.

Similarly we notice that candidates who are applying for job opportunities feel it is not such a big deal to put in the duties and responsibilities that they were handling in detail on their CV. They think that to say they were an accounts assistant or an office manager for example is enough. We as employers and recruiters would obviously know what they had been doing.

Well, it is, ladies and gentlemen. It is a BIG DEAL. In this context, people tend not to understand that you have to create an aura of expectation for the employer to even consider looking at your CV …twice!

For you to do that, here are the tips:

  1. Be precise but ensure you cover all the most important aspects. Include the duties that you have done within each and every specific position you were in charge of. 17 words in a sentence will serve as a perfect example.
  2. Relevance of duties done – The duties that you have listed within the different positions that you were in charge of should be relevant. This means that they should be in line with what the employer is looking for based on the job description given.
  3. Achievements – Go even further to include major achievements that you have made in each of the positions that you have held in your professional experience. To be clear-cut and authentic, put in numbers and figures on the targets that you surpassed and the time period if need be.

With the above in mind, you can be assured that you will have caught the attention of those companies you applied to.

WHAT EMPLOYERS HATE TO SEE IN YOUR CV

Here are a few tips on what employers hate to see in you CV.

  1. Spelling and grammatical errors: It is a good idea to use different typefaces in your documents but for CVs just use simple features like easy to read fonts, bullets, bold and italics. Grammatical errors will lead the employer to a conclusion that you are a careless person. Always spell check before sending it to the employer.
  1. Irrelevant information: Do not include information that do not directly related to the job you are applying for. Age, gender, race, weight, height are regarded as noise, DO NOT include them unless it is asked by the employer.

  1. Unqualified and under-qualified candidates: Ensure that you are qualified for the job you are applying for in terms of skills and experiences. Recruiters hate when they come across a CV that has no relation to the job description.

  • Tailor a CV to a specific job - it is vital to ensure the script is relevant to each job application, rather than sending the same generic CV.
  • Keep it simple - it should be easy to read and use active language. Two pages of A4 is enough with a mini profile included in the first half page Include key information - personal details, including name, address, phone number, email address and any professional social media presence should be clear. A date of birth is no longer needed, owing to age discrimination rules.
  • A photo is only essential for jobs such as acting and modelling, otherwise it is a matter of choice
  • Showcase achievements - offer evidence of how targets were exceeded and ideas created, but always be honest.
  • Check and double check - avoid sloppy errors, take a fresh look the next day and ask for a second opinion from a trusted friend or colleague.

When-ever we go into Universities we always stress the importance of a short CV. It should be short, sharp and relevant. The most baffling of all is when we see CVs from recent Graduates that span approximately 4 pages, and someone with 10+ years experience has a one page CV. Remember that your CV should demonstrate your Skill, Experience and Education. Think about format and layout HERE

 

Our recommendation is as follows:

  • Interns, recent Graduates, Entry Level Job Seekers – Keep it to 1 page
  • Experienced individuals – 2 pages if possible, maximum 3 page.
