Our client is currently comprised of four high-end properties as well as a destination management company offering a full service for safaris in Uganda. In these tracts of glorious wilderness they have built small, fantastically comfortable safari lodges and camps. Their award-winning lodges are intimate, private and unique. Services are gentle and discreet. Looking for a Lodge management couple.

Responsible for: The success of the lodge, maintaining a focus on guest delight and driving the conservational ethos of the company.

Responsible to : Group General Manager

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Guests

In this role you will be required to a focus on guest delight at all times – without guests having a great experience, there is no business. Real guest delight comes from the heart but it needs to be driven all the time:

  • Inspire and motivate guest delight
  • Build relationships with all guests in camp and & trade partners
  • Set and maintain minimum standards as prescribed and agreed with Operations Manager
  • Focus on giving guests individual attention
  • Ensure the guest touch points in your lodge are happening
  • Surprise your guests often and tailor make individualize experiences
  • Meet and host guests
  • Respond to negative feedback in a productive manner
  • Use all feedback in motivating and improving your lodge
  • Fix anything not up to the agreed standard quickly and efficiently (maintenance and service issues)
  • Never compromise our product and guest experience
  • Responsible for all food and beverage standards and service standards in the lodge
  • Ensure all guest experiences are done according to the prescribed agreed standards
  • Ensure food quality remains at the standards set and agreed
  • Ensure the menus are set and followed
  • Use the best quality of produce
  • Ensure all service staff are adequately trained and able to serve guests at the standard set
  • Look to new ways of improving the guest experience
  1. People

In this role you will be required to lead, motivate and inspire a team of staff to deliver guest delight daily including:

  • Make yourself available to staff
  • Develop your teams and individuals
  • Be consistent and fair
  • Manage the performance of your staff
  • Manage poor performance
  • Find solutions through consultation
  • Ensure training programs and exchanges are in place
  • Encourage team work
  • Allocate responsibility
  • Resolve any issues or conflict efficiently.
  1. Process

You will be required to ensure that adequate processes are in place and adhered to ensuring that all aspects of the lodge runs smoothly, including:

  • Maintain a constant reporting and communication line to the office and operations manager
  • Staff integration program for all new employees
  • Performance reviews
  • Adherence to policies and procedures
  • Financial process and systems (including all stock taking and reporting)
  • Maintenance schedules and processes.
  1. Commercial Responsibility

The management couple will be responsible for the operation of the lodge, revenues, costs and the bottom line including:

  • Driving revenues through delighted guests
  • Monthly budgeting and proactive planning
  • Financial meetings
  • Look at new ways of working smarter
  • Monitoring of controls and systems
  • Ensure that month end procedures are followed: inventory taken, checked and inputted
  • Stay within the budgets set for the financial year
  • Plan annual budgets with operations manager carefully in order to maintain your product

Skills and competencies.

  • At least 4 years’ experience in lodge management (preferably a remote, African lodge)
  • Food and beverage knowledge and passion
  • Maintenance experience
  • Good administration skills
  • Have managed a team of people in Africa
  • Preferably should have worked internationally or traveled
  • Have a solid understanding of the travel industry
  • Passion for environment and nature conservation.
  • Have an understanding of the industry’s financial processes.
